The Pros and Cons of Laser Check Printers

As with all technology, there are pros and cons to laser check printers. Laser check printers are generally used for business purposes and are no stranger to the ‘pros and cons’ rule.

Laser check printers utilize a photosensitive drum, or belt, which is charged by an electrostatic charge where a laser beam touches it for it to work. It works essentially by melting toner onto the paper. While this type of printing works better than traditional printers, there are some drawbacks to laser check printers.

Pros of Laser Check Printers

Quick printing—Laser check printers print very quickly. If you have a large payroll and need to be able to print checks out quickly, a laser check printer will get the job done quickly and efficiently.
High-quality printing—these printers handle a high quality of text and graphics, providing a much cleaner and clearer printing job which looks very professional.
Toner usage—Laser check printers don’t use ink like standard printers, they use toner, which lasts considerably longer than ink cartridges do.

Cons of Laser Check Printers

Expense—Laser check printers are considerably more expensive than standard printers, which use ink. A standard printer can cost less than $100 but an inexpensive laser check printer will cost more than $500.
Space consuming—Laser check printers are hefty in size, they can’t sit neatly beside your desk on a shelf, they need a considerable amount of space.
Heavy—Because of their bulk, laser check printers are quite heavy and are not easily moved around from place to place.
Cartridge replacement cost—the cost to replace a toner cartridge on your laser check printer is very expensive. Although you will not have to replace the cartridges nearly as often as with ink printers, the cartridges are still very expensive to replace.

Regardless of what type of printer you choose, you should weigh seriously the pros and cons associated with them and decide which printer is best for you. While laser check printers are considerably more expensive to purchase, their maintenance and longevity may very well be worth it for your business.
